mal pais costa ricaSanta Teresa beach is located on the Costa Rican Central Pacific coast, 14 kilometers (about 9 miles) from Cóbano town, on the south of Nicoya peninsula. Whether you come from the ferry that crosses the Gulf of Nicoya from the port of Puntarenas, or from the airport at Tambor beach, you will first pass through Cóbano. This town is the supply centre for all the other beaches, and it is also the place where you will find the municipal office building, a hospital, police station, post office, etc. If you come from the north side by the coast route, you will arrive directly to Santa Teresa.

Santa Teresa is about 8 kilometers (some 5 miles) long. Its territory goes from “el cruce” (the intersection of the road coming from Cóbano and the one coming from the north coast), to Hermosa beach. At the south side of the intersection is located the beautiful Malpaís beach.

“El cruce” is the main intersection of the two roads, and it is also known as Playa del Carmen, a wide and flat beach, perfect for spending the day.

Along these 8 kilometers a very colorful, multicultural and worldly town has been developed, with a lot of movement throughout the year and many touristic options such as hotels, hostels, bungalows, camping places, restaurants, tours, rentals, etc., as well as other services for local people and newcomers: two different banks with cashpoints (ATM’s), medical centre, supermarkets and all sorts of stores.

mal pais santa teresa El Rey Patricio Hotel is located 2 kilometers (1,2 miles) north from the football court, which is considered Santa Teresa’s central point. Right at the end of the beach you will find a rather residential area, where houses and hotels are surrounded by forest, and where you can peacefully enjoy a good night sleep listening to the sound of the waves, away from the rowdiness of town.
